Ambient time capsules
Dedicated to her husband, who passed away a year ago, Cedar Loop is a musician from the Pacific Northwest with field recordings, synthesizers, and digital pianos on full display. It’s difficult to fathom what the talented musician must be going through, and to imagine an extended player spanning four pieces and over 30 minutes is quite touching. These ambient time capsules drip with emotional charges that can’t be ignored. A symphony that drifts from the horizon, tracks like “Cape Disappointment” provide over 10 minutes of comfort, stretched Fennesz-styled fizz-fuzz, and blurred emotive strands. It’s not all darkness and solemnity, “In Places You Aren’t” slides through higher tones and drones that uplift the soul as “I Turned 30 And All I Got Were These Field Recordings” pierces noisier sound sources while a musical thread keeps this soundscapes bunched together like a fading memory. Closing with the title track, Cedar Loop delivers a distant shuffling mood that ebbs and flows—capturing wind and rain and gently gliding piano keys in one fell swoop. Engulfing and worth consuming every single minute.
