Bloq :: Life from the Outside (Couchblip!)
This Sydney (AU) artist known as Jim Dodd who was actually raised in the UK just released his debut full-length with Couchblip! With bass driven simplicity and staccato beats that all mold perfectly together, his unique elements of sound-design have him in a field of his own creating a style and displaying it perfectly on Life from the Outside. Top quality electronics (and even electro) mixed with melodic and uplifting mechanical rhythms that are sure to please those looking for something new in the genre. A sense of simple structures is evident on this debut focusing on the rhythm inside the machine he uses and extracting the melody from every produced sound. It’s tracks like “So What’s Stopping You?” that remain etched in the memory bank with its fluid and funky percussion that melts alongside atmospheric basslines. An emphasis on the electro-acoustic side of the platter brings Life from the Outside the attention it deserves as an initial release on this fledging Australian based label. An example of this theme is apparent on “I Wanna Break With You”.. electro basslines run rampant with totally rhythmic melodic hooks, tweaks and the odd vocoded extracts. Even with the random dose of electro/electronic music featured on this release, it’s also complimented by light ambient pieces such as the wobbly “Sunray Reprise (For Betty)” and “Stolen Library Books”. Life from the Outside is sure to remain on the top of your CD-bin as it continually propels itself into your subconscious with ease.

Pellarin :: Tangible Abstractions (Couchblip!)
It’s interesting to see an emphasis on the obscure and sizzling electronic side of experimental music, and with this debut full length on Couchblip!, Lars Pellarin (aka Pellarin) makes full use of this formula to create an enriching and intriguing release packed with Autechrean influenced sound-sculptures. This Danish producer redefines a cosmic envelope of digital electronic sound elements and casually morphs them into musical sculptures of sound. While Tangible Abstractions flows into a minimal state of precise rhythms and basslines, tracks like “So Far” and “Eccaw” are cut in such a clean fashion that you’re left to wonder where such sounds could be found. “Community” taps into the ambient electronic territory where snappy tweaks and tiny melodies dance with sputtering beats and a casual drift of abstract rhythms. “Belarus”, one of the highlight tracks on Tangible Abstractions manages to punch a hole through bass bins that are anxious to grasp such low frequencies. Pellarin is definitely one to look out for. He’s already made a lasting impression on the Other Animals Compilation with Couchblip! and produced a remix for Disjunction Reunion’s Computer Dead Reckoning. It won’t be any surprise to see people gravitate towards Tangible Abstractions as it casually displays its raw electronic minimalism to those who are seeking such a groove.
