aAirial :: In The Wind (EC Underground)

Tranquilized piano keys brush up against downtempo sonic peripherals as an organic flow transpires from start to end.

Eleven magnetized miniatures

If there ever was a way to close the year, aAirial’s In The Wind would certainly fit the bill. The Nancy, Lorraine-based artist has amassed quite a catalog over the years with imprints such as Rednetic, Mahorka, Laridae, Imaginary Nonexistent, Redose, and self-releases as well. Tranquilized piano keys brush up against downtempo sonic peripherals as an organic flow transpires from start to end.

Such a calming collection to consume, tracks like “Angels In The Sky” and “Bird People” cascade with an effervescent glow, combining digital elements with actual instruments and voices. “Lutter Contre Le Temps” runs a parallel path; its French lyrics are delicately sprinkled above chilled beats that feel distant yet upfront.

There are also stories to be told on In The Wind (ref. “Dusk”) and the lament of relaxed piano music that carefully wisps by on tracks like “Nearness” and “Yesterday And The Day Before.” While treading lightly on new-age tropes, aAirial maneuvers a myriad of loosened ambient, piano, and downtempo strains, transitioning from open vistas to serene audible time capsules as “Outlet” sums it up with its classical influences; closing these eleven magnetized miniatures with a spark.
