    On Saturday, March 18, just before midnight, Walt Disney Concert Hall becomes the setting for a progressive, ambient musical movement. The boundaries of time, space, and sound harmonize during an all-night experience of music and visual art presented by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association to kick start Minimalist Jukebox, a two-week festival dedicated to this diverse genre under the guidance of American composer John Adams.

    This extraordinary event, which runs from 11:59p, on Saturday, March 18 to 6:00am on Sunday, March 19, features sets by special guest artists Boom Bip, Dntel, and John Tejada as LA’s own dublab soundsystem provides the soundtrack between acts. The evening culminates with The Orb’s live performance. Dr. Alex Paterson and Thomas Fehlmann are The Orb – and since their seminal Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld in 1991 to last year’s Okie Dokie It’s The Orb on Kompakt, the Orb have continued to create electronic music from spacious and minimal celestial-techno to spiraling and hypnotic dance floor anthems.

    Designed to encourage guests to explore Walt Disney Concert Hall with a continual change of place, the all-night concert features visual artists, including internationally-renowned visual artist, Vello Virkhaus, using lobby walls, public spaces and inside the Auditorium as their minimalist artistic canvas. The performances’ audio is pumped throughout the building to make sure concert-goers never miss a beat on their way to the dance floor in BP Hall.

    The Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Minimalist Jukebox festival – the first major exploration of this ground-breaking movement by an American orchestra – explores ambient, orchestral, chamber, and world music manifestations in the repertoire, from March 18 – April 2, 2006. Composer John Adams serves as the director of the festival, which is enhanced further by another collaboration with the Getty Research Institute. Partnerships with other local arts institutions, including the Los Angeles Master Chorale, Piano Spheres, CalArts, and USC, round out the festival’s offerings. Three festival performances offer $10 pricing for all seats.

    1259 image 2(THE ORB) The Orb is known as the godfather of the electronic music genre known as ambient house. Frontman Dr. Alex Paterson has worked with rotating collaborators to create the Orb since its creation in 1988, and has provided a musical oasis by layering synthwork and looped effects over the slowed down rhythms of classic Chicago house. Inspired by ambient artists such as Brian Eno, Paterson concocted the first “chill-out” music by sampling everything from BBC nature recordings, to dialogue from PBS children’s show “Reading Rainbow.” With the Orb’s instant fame as the pioneer of the post rave ambient genre, Big Life was quick to sign the group. In 1991 the Orb released their debut album The Orb’s Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld. Paterson along with Kris Weston (aka Thrash) toured Europe and continued to expand their notoriety by giving audiences a barrage of stunning aural and visual delicacies previously unparalleled for a dance act. In 1992 the Orb would enter the Guinness Book of World records with the longest single ever to break into Britain’s charts at just under 40 minutes. They continued to awe audiences and create new standards as their spectacular live shows became “events,” incorporating even more brilliant visual displays. Throughout the late nineties the Orb worked with Andy Hughes and longtime collaborator Thomas Fehlmann to create Orbus Terrarum released in 1995 and 1997’s Orblivion. In 1998 the Orb toured as “Le Petit Orb” – a stripped down show which enabled them to travel more freely and perform in more intimate venues. 2001 saw the release of the Orb’s sixth studio album Cydonia, which explored the experimental edges of electronica, techno and drum’n’bass, and featured Jim Roome who replaced Hughes in 2000. In support of this record Moby invited the Orb to his Area One Tour alongside New Order, The Roots, and Outkast, among others. Bicycles and Tricycles was released in 2004 on Sanctuary Records and in 2005 Okie Dokie, It’s the Orb on Kompakt was released. Okie Dokie… features more involvement from member and longtime collaborator Thomas Fehlmann, and includes all of the creative and genre-pushing elements that have kept the Orb in the forefront of electronic music. After spending time touring as Le Petit Orb, Dr. Alex Paterson and Thomas Fehlmann return with their full show as the Orb at Walt Disney Concert Hall, providing the sensory explosion that has redefined electronic and dance music for the past two decades.

    1259 image 3(BOOM BIP) When we last met Bryan Hollon, aka Boom Bip, we left him at a crossroads. His debut solo album, Seed To Sun (Lex/Warp) catapulted him from Cincinnati’s hip hop underground to the lofty realms of the international indie cognoscenti, which along the way includes the famous quote from the late John Peel, heralding Boom Bip as a “modern day Captain Beefheart” after his first Peel Session. A significant signpost in an emerging genre combining the palette of the laptop producer with hip-hop and rock, Boom Bip went one further and turned Seed To Sun into a four piece live band, performing at Glastonbury, Dedbeat Festival in Rome, London’s Ether Festival, and the Pompidou Centre in Paris, just to name a few. The release of Seed to Sun also put Boom Bip on the lips of his contemporaries and led to a string of extraordinary remixes by artists including Boards of Canada, Mogwai and Four Tet. These were collected on the 2004 Corymb compilation to sizeable acclaim. Meanwhile, Boom Bip upped stakes and moved to Silverlake in LA to start work on Blue Eyed in the Red Room. The new album returns Boom Bip to his beginnings as a musician. He played everything himself on the new album – which is not to say he has moved away from the ultra-finesse of his unique production style – the textures, sonic details and intricacies, tones, melodies and hypnotic reveries are all still to be found in ever more evocative shapes and emotional colors.

    1259 image 4(DNTEL) Jimmy Tamborello is DNTEL, and he makes electronic music with not only Dntel (since 1994), but also with his space-age, dance-floor 80s-insired band Figurine, not to mention as one half of the poptronica superstar duo, the Postal Service (with Ben Gibbard). While Tamborello’s music has been released worldwide over the years on labels including Sub Pop, Kompakt, Plug Research, Phthalo, 555, and ~Scape, Tamborello remains extremely active in his local LA music scene: he’s a former KXLU DJ, present DJ at Dublab.com, and co-hosts a monthly night of DJs in town. Dntel’s hauntingly beautiful record Life Is Full Of Possibilities (Plug Research) combines melancholy melodies with an assortment of electronic production styles. He enlisted some friends to add vocals and guitar with the results ranging from minimal techno to pop songs buried in static, cut-up acoustic guitars, sampled symphonies struggling to find somewhere to settle, found sounds, and blissed-out drones. Guests on the record include Chris Gunst (Beachwood Sparks, ex-Strictly Ballroom), Mia Doi Todd (solo artist, City Zen records), Meredith Figurine (Figurine), Rachel Haden (solo artist, ex-That Dog), and Benjamin Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie), plus guitar by Paul Larson (Athalia, ex-Strictly Ballroom) and Brian McMahan (The For Carnation, ex-Slint). Tamborello is currently working on new full lengths as Dntel and James Figurine.

    1259 image 5(JOHN TEJADA) Normally associated with his techno peers from Detroit, Europe and elsewhere in the world, JOHN TEJADA has embraced electronic music as a personal frontier, expanding on his formidable resume as a techno recording artist as producer and remixer, DJ, and label owner (Palette Records). With dozens of singles, remixes, film and TV work, plus contributions to countless CDs, his development has born a slew of tracks deeply informed by his uncompromised aesthetic of diligent production which finds its roots in Detroit Techno, but references a far broader range of music, both in and outside of electronic music. Tejada grew up in family of performing artists so while his musically formative years were steep in classical music, he began playing piano and drums as a child, and eventually grew to include hip hop, DJing and finally, electronic music to his always-broadening musical sensibility. Known for crafting a brand of subtle musical techno, his recorded output ranges across tempo and genre lines, from chilled out affairs with spacious arrangements to pulsating, densely layered, deeply energetic tracks that work magnificently in the hands of DJs as well as on the home stereo. Earlier on, his music found release on labels such as A13, Multiplex and Generation R&S. Following those successes, he established his own imprint, Palette, in Los Angeles in 1996, and has enjoyed years of steady growth and recognition featuring his own output plus that of an expanding roster. He has continued to record for other labels such as Pokerflat, Plug Research, Seventh City, Playhouse and others, often in collaboration since 1991 with Arian Leviste; alongside these numerous singles, has also produced albums for Playhouse, Palette, Plug Research, deFocus, Moods and Grooves, Immigrant and A13.
