Profiles
Russell Haswell :: Never stop
Russell Haswell is a 55-year old electronic musician and visual artist, most well-known for his extreme computer music. He currently lives in Glasgow, having worked together with Aphex Twin, Florian Hecker, Merzbow, Mika Vainio, Yasunao Tone and Peter Rehberg and released on labels such as Warp, Editions Mego, and Diagonal.
Kroppskännedom :: Body Awareness
Andreas Malm describes what he does with Kroppskännedom as an amateur rock-oriented continuation of the more abstract and tape loop-based work he did before, or as an attempt to make song-based music that somewhat got lost along the way.
Vaag :: Vague music
A brief, if not “vague,” Q&A session with Haarlem, Netherlands-based musician Marc Brinkerink (aka Vaag) intentionally designed to deliver a clear and direct line of communication without unnecessary clutter—except when it comes to his music, of course.
Liam Kramer-White & Sun Yizhou :: Technically incorrect
Factory Label Shipping Express is an album released at the end of 2024 by Sun Yizhou and Liam Kramer-White. Sun Yizhou is a Beijing-based experimental musician who also runs the Aloe label. Liam Kramer-White (Beige, LMFAO, Winter’s Treasures, B33N) currently lives in Philadelphia and runs the Phons label. Factory Label Shipping Express is the first album they made together, via an exchange of emails and sound files, based on phone recordings.
Bernhard Living :: Technological Lessness
Upon listening to Bernhard Living’s output, the music is extremely minimalistic and doesn’t actively try to be challenging in some way; so with how little there is that’s happening, I immediately knew that this was coming from someone who knew what they were doing.
Red Brut :: Spontaneous sound collage
On Bare Ground is a sculptural work blending its lo-fi with haunting melodies, field recordings, and ethereal soundscapes. Uncompromising in its approach, the album evokes the echoes of experimental music from a spectrum that ranges from dark bedroom pop to rhythmic noise, crafting a cloudy and dreamlike atmosphere.
Mark Fell :: Music imagines itself
At the send+receive Festival of Sound, Limpe Fuchs first heard and appreciated the music of Mark Fell, planting the seed of a collaboration that came to fruition when Fell (along with his son Rian Treanor) visited Fuchs at her home in Peterskirchen, Germany in September 2022. Black Truffle announced the release of the results of this extensive session in the audacious form of a triple LP, housing over two hours of music across its six sides titled Dessogia / Queetch / Fauch.
Suumhow :: A world of errors and glitches
“Suumhow is what happens when two childhood friends who discovered electronic music together in their teens and then reunite 20 years later.” On the heels of their 5th album, appropriately titled 5ilth—available on n5MD October 25, 2024—Suumhow took some time out of their schedule to discuss the good old days of IDM, their backgrounds, processes, and beautifully choreographed sonic glitches.
Monolake :: Machine Loving / Machine Learning with Robert Henke
Robert Henke, founding and sole member of the legendary Berlin experimental techno group Monolake and co-founder with (former Monolake partner Gerhard Behles and Bernd Roggendorf) of Ableton Live, the groundbreaking software company that took aspects of loop-based electronic music from a semi-obscure corner of music production and turned it into a driving force of musical creation as one of the top tier DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) in use today.
Ian Boddy :: 25 Years of DiN
“The DiN ambient label was set up by Ian Boddy in 1999 to release ambient electronica that bridged the gap between the analogue sound of the early 70’s synth pioneers and the digital soundscapes of the more experimental modern exponents of electronic music.” Now celebrating their 25th Anniversary with a colossal 20 track compilation (CD/Digital), Ian Boddy discusses the label and its history with Philippe Blache.
