[Release page] After just combing through Ian Boddy & Parallel Worlds’ Exit Strategy (DiN) and letting Ahnst Anders’ recent Home (Ant-Zen) settle in, now comes this behemoth by Empusae & Shinkiro entitled Organic.Aural.Ornaments. This trio of gaseous releases combine to create a hauntingly dark fluid of audio deformation and expansion.
Empusae & Shinkiro (a collaboration between Nicolas Van Meirhaegh and Manabu Hiramoto) blend poly-rhythmic landscapes of spacious noise, clutter, and chaos around a plethora of calming ambient drones. And it doesn’t just stop there. Throughout each of the six sequentially numbered ornaments, dynamic fluctuations and organic timbres, ranging from seven to eleven minutes in length, fall out of the midnight sky and cover the entire audio spectrum. The title of this album couldn’t be more on target either; a truly engulfing experience is delivered as a fog of sizzling bass and interspersed melodies/beats trickle through the layers. Each track is elongated slightly from the previous, coming across as reinterpretations of each other. But this doesn’t necessarily mean that there are moments of familiar tones crossing paths. Each ornament seems to progressively nurture itself like an amoeba trying to latch on to a new lifeform. And as each cell multiplies, time begins to fold onto itself. This entire album is very much alive.
Empusae & Shinkiro’s bubbling pool of ambience harkens back to Rod Modell’s The Autonomous Music Project and matches up with the above mentioned musicians but somehow keeps its distinct, post-tribal feeling to a minimum. An engaging achievement encapsulating itself in a sea of turbulent waves.
