Valance Drakes :: An honest approach to it EP (Detroit Underground)

A mixture of fine-tuned and de-tuned glitch abstracts—tempered, submerged and drifting slow-motion electronics.

Perhaps the closest we’ve seen to a full length release—although only a 21-minute runtime—Valance Drakes reveals an 8-piece EP for Detroit Underground. An honest approach to it is a mixture of fine-tuned and de-tuned glitch abstracts—tempered, submerged and drifting slow-motion electronics. “Greed Operates In Hidden Ways” fosters more of an emotional pull, unlike its alien siblings. Fuzzy and brittle ambient bits collapse all around the foreground, yet these downtempo interludes (in the two to three-minute range) continue to tease the listener in short bursts. “Reflections Of Our Values” is such a piece, its mechanical pulse chugs along and carries with it an attractive audible aura. Calm and subtle, brisk click-hop moments emerge on “Rework Angles To Evolve Status,” yet it all breaks away in a DSP-driven fog. An honest approach to it flickers about with its articulated electronics just itching to break free from condensed form. As blips and bleeps shapeshift their way into the subconscious, Valance Drakes’ signature tangled-glitch palette is clearly evident, but it also might benefit from more developed pieces next time around.

An honest approach to it is available on Detroit Underground.

Note: An honest approach to it is composed of two DYI releases (Promise is a Comfort to a Fool & They Sold Me On A Half Truth) on behalf of The Community Scratch Games which takes place during Easter in Galway Ireland.
