Nachol Patrol :: Panter 777 (Minimal Rome)

As a youngster I tried to stay abreast of releases from an up and coming artist. A bespectacled dutch man, one who looked like a serious amount of time was spent indoor and most likely behind the screen of a computer; Danny Wolfers. That geekish style might have suggested hours spent behind a laptop but it was another set of machines that took up the Dutchman´s time, an arsenal of synthesizers.

Since my fledgling teenage years Wolfers has found a deserved place in the world of electronic excellence under a dizzying array of monikers and an eye watering number of releases. Panter 777 sees the synth junkie return to one of his lesser employed pseudonyms on the label which first debuted it.

The Nacho Patrol project was born out a love for Italian soundtracks, specifically the garbled guitars and macho basslines that characterized mafia movies of the 70s. The 2009 12” was later given a super limited tape reissue with an extra track, “Panter 777,” which is finally out on vinyl. Background noise hisses as bars are tied to a chair, gagged and twisted. Smoke thickly swirls, a grimacing bass contorting beneath the stretching of strings. Tension is piled atop tension. The murky underground being laid bare. Jared Wilson is on remix duty, adding some meat to the bone with snapping percussion and a touch of thump. His trademark, a good helping of bitter acid, is added to the groove for some extra bite that turns the original toward the floor.

The choice to release this 12” is an intriguing one. Two tracks under the MRX series banner of Minimal Rome, a series which has, generally, focused on the tougher side of the electronic palette. Panter 777 is a much softer installment, despite Jared Wilson’s acrid addition. Some more from Nacho Patrol would have been nice, but perhaps this is a teaser for something bigger?

Panter 777 is available on Minimal Rome.
