2037 image 1(October 2010) Adepth Audio are now in line for their third release. On the back of Rob Belleville and Microworld comes Glasgow based Arne Weinberg. The German born Weinberg is just shy of a decade of releasing music. This latest EP, Integrity Constraint Part 1, has gone back in time in one respect, with techno godfather Kirk Degiorgio offering up a lengthy remix for the B-side.

On putting needle to this record the listener is transported back in time. In the 90s the likes of The Black Dog, B12 and GPR were spearheading the sounds of UK techno. Weinberg is not so much a fan of this UK style as he is a believer in it, and that comes through on this latest EP. “The Circle” is a wonderfully subtle piece of techno. It is a piece of listening music, with aural paths being laid in analogue bars and gentle reverberations. The follow up piece “Desdemonia” is of a similar vein. The sound is a modern echo of Warp’s Artificial Intelligence sound, understated and clever. The track is a warm and textured piece of electronics, with Weinberg producing a sound that few artists today are. The B-Side is dedicated to Kirk Degiorgio, one of the figureheads of the UK techno scene, and his take on Weinberg’s “Paralyazed Tribes.” It sounds like someone has taken the crossfader and switched records here. Beats lead into Degiorgio’s vocoded lyrics and tech-house twists. Some nice arching sounds develop in the track, but they do not sit easily atop the forcing beats and twiddling lines. In many respects it feels like a track superimposed onto another rather than a remix. In some parts the track works, but in others it just doesn’t feel right.

Integrity Constraint Part 1 is a split of styles. Degiorgio is one of the lights of not just UK techno, but techno. Degiogio under monikers like As One, Elegy and Future/Past, not to forget his A.R.T. and Op-art labels, made some of the definitive music of the 90s techno movement. Degiorgio has created some amazing material spanning some twenty years, but in this case the draw of the modern club scene has eclipsed the past. Weinberg has gone down the opposite route. His excursions are not for commercial gain, but to produce a sound that is rarely explored since those early analogue experimenters.

Integrity Constraint Part 1 is out now on Adepth Audio.
