Simoncino 'Werehouse EP'

WereHouse - EP - Simoncino Simoncino has been building his credentials for several years now. Since 2008 the Italian has been serving up his take on the Chitown sound—having pushed the house envelope on labels like Skylax, Quintessentials and Mathematics. For his latest the HotMix Records founder has made a trip to Greece as Echovolt Records dish up the Werehouse EP.

To get the things underway is Simoncino’s homage to the town that got everything started; “Chicago.” The track is a wonderful lo-fi Chitown affair. Subdued hi-hats and a melting bassline combine to produce a track bordering the limits of house. “Ocean” follows a similarly esoteric path. The track encapsulates the ebbing folds of the analogue sea, rolling and rising in a lush organic sound. Legowelt surfaces for remix duty of “Werehouse.” The Dutch virtuoso turns an analogue shade, vocal samples amplified in this lounging machine piece. The original closes the record—warm currents envelope the listener as Simoncino drapes the ears in a robe of deep tones and slighted beats.

Simoncino’s sound comes from the Larry Heard tradition. There are some gentle techno thoughts coming through, but it is warm and layered house that is at the heart of the Italian’s sound. The tracks have a club friendliness but sit as happily in the thinking headphone—it’s thought-provoking material that sits on the sunnier side of the Chicago shelf.
