The sounds here on Expanse respect my tonal comfort zone, sweet hissing with little savory moments, lots of interesting ideas woven throughout while preserving the peaceful even flow.
Innovative atmospheric instrumental music
Melodic ambient textures, excellent for floating in your sound listening zone. Headphones give the experience that extra nudge into the deepest distant foghorn details. The atmosphere is slow and sustained, with no sharp or disturbing moments. I am almost sort of surprised to learn that these sustained tones were each made on a range of ordinary acoustic and electro-acoustic instruments such as piano, bass, guitar and violin with electronic instruments such as modular, tape machines and vintage synths and samplers, arranged and recorded to 1/4″ tape in live takes. The layers include some scratchy hissing, just like things in dreams about the past do in general, and provide a pleasing ponderous sonic haze to relax to. Nobody is dancing, this is all about slowly floating.
The sounds here on Expanse respect my tonal comfort zone, sweet hissing with little savory moments, lots of interesting ideas woven throughout while preserving the peaceful even flow. The layers are easy-going, nothing dense or snaggish. This is perfect for embracing sleep. It seems awkward to say that, once upon a time saying music put you to sleep was a pejorative. Imagine that. Lately I hear that sleep music has a valuable healing property, and can be part of a technique for getting physical rest, for good health. The tones sustain, are unique and mostly melodic in selection, and provide interesting textures and big skies.
A steady flow with no bumps or surprises ::
And yet… There is a compositional sophistication that guides the flow. Sleep music relies on one thing, providing a steady flow with no bumps or surprises. Fields We Found has an artistic experience to impart, while respecting some of the best of the so-called Sleep Music conventions (no bumps causing unintentional waking). There is more here than good zzzz’s. Best of all, Expanse is all about innovative atmospheric instrumental music.

“Expanse is my most recently recorded music completed in January and February 2022. It was made during a time of reflection and deeper understanding, new ideas leading to new discoveries.” ~ Fields We Found
