Top-10 Synopsis ::
Bitcrush’s In Distance caused quite a ripple in my heart this year with torn layers of drenched guitars, dramatic beat-work and an intensity that has yet to be topped all year. Loess’ Wind And Water (also on n5MD) is an album that should be listened to in its entirety; emotional, riveting and dusted with ambience. Sensiva’s Giosun through me off-guard this year (as I had never heard of him until receipt of this disc) with its enrapturing essence pouring from all angles on the burgeoning Sensotech imprint. Jean-Paul Bondy’s The Path of Most Resistors (oddly released on Compost) is perhaps the most enjoyable, funky and upbeat electro album I’ve heard all year; chunky breaks done right. Syntaks’ Awakes is quite possibly the most gorgeous piece of shoegaze material yet; a beauty from start to end that must be heard and absorbed to appreciate. Fabio Fonda’s Schema, while not as readily available as others in this Top-10 (but purchasable via his website) is reminiscent of Bitcrush’s latest excursions (with a lighter feel) decked out with imperative charm. Kattoo’s Hold On To A Dream drives like a black Ferrari on the coast-line (I would imagine), with its tranquilized soundtrack driven epics sliding into one another beautifully yet peacefully all the way through. Burial’s self titled debut with Hyperdub caught up with me late December 2006 with an addictive all-consuming groove; dub-infested ambient propulsion with classic Photek-inspired sounds that are generally pitched down to absolute perfection. Proem’s You Shall Have Ever Been, dedicated to J. Jedlika (Coredump), is a heart-shattering display of melodic electronics in true form, coupled with his excellent Decibel Festival 2005 performance is an added bonus on the 2nd disc. Karsten Pflum’s Idhax is perhaps the closest anyone has travelled near Autechrean soil; digitally balanced (and corrupted) soundwork with definitively cut low-ends that are both intoxicating and all-consuming at the same time.
