Although little is known about these 3 artists and little is forthcoming from the MP3 labels that present their music for general consumption, each has several releases to their credit on an assortment of international MP3 labels. Stylistically the difference is more obvious.

Reid Dunn – aka Wisp – of New York is a prolific artist on the MP3 scene, releasing tracks, EPs and even albums on MP3 labels such as Binkcrsh, IoZ and TavCOM. Dunn has recently found a home with Sonicterror Records. Dunn’s Pleeper EP on the Binkcrsh label is a reasonably varied rhythmic electronic music excursion that makes good use of some sharp beats, well chosen samples and field recordings. Covering several styles through the course of the 30 minute 6-track duration of this EP, he touches on drum ‘n’ bass (“Glowing Fungus”), and ambient (“The Sea and I”) but chooses mostly to stick to occasionally crunchy rhythmic melodies. Of particular note are the opening 2 tracks, “Flax Flew Far” and “Glowing Fungus” with their intelligent use of samples, sharp beats, tense synth tones and an attention to detail that results in an accomplished finished product.

In contrast, Modex’s Three Days EP combines almost completely random, non-linear electronic chaos and has little structure. Modex – otherwise known as the dubiously named Rob Fragilenine of Australia – is also quite prolific, and has an impressive archive available for download from the Australian mp3.com website. Surprisingly, the 8th and final track on the Three Days EP, “Hands For You,” shows there is another side to Modex. Gone is the freeform random noisiness and in are metallic choppy beats, deep buzzing synths and a droning bassline.

The best of the bunch comes from Linenoise of the Laced Milk collective who enlists the vocal chanting talents of Afro-Brazilian Pupila. The Lunar Bliss EP is a mellow collection of chilled out techno tracks with an air of cool. Female harmonies and vocal samples are chosen for accompaniment and utilised to great effect throughout. Reminiscent of early Biosphere and 631 image 3 Orbital, which is not a bad thing at all. “Part I” features jabbing ambient techno beats and relaxed freeform jazz harmonies while “Part 2” continues the theme but with a less obvious jazz vibe. “Part 3” and “Part 5” are completely electronic whereas “Part 4” introduces a mellower more ethereal quality. The Lunar Bliss EP might not offer anything new, but it is well-produced with each track mixed into the next to form a very enjoyable 40-minute work.

Here we have 3 EPs from 2 different Internet labels and a cross-section of the sort of music that can be found on the multitude of free labels in cyberspace. As with all labels and releases, styles and quality vary but the standard is generally very good, with something to meet all tastes to be found with a little searching.
