Another kaleidoscope of musical color

With Skysleep Interference Works, another kaleidoscope of musical color, the psychedelic IDM maestro returns, fusing organic soundscapes, drifting rhythms, and instrumental electronics once more. And with cover art that is a swirling collage of surreal, vivid, and nostalgic imagery, the gifted musician from Vancouver (via Scotland) continues to unearth untapped sparks and roughened edges we haven’t heard before—year after year constructing familiar landscapes we can almost touch.

According to Daniels’ liner notes, “vague recollections of things can suddenly manifest in a different way,” meaning that sounds can represent distinct connotations for everyone listening. It also appears that Daniels has drawn inspiration from the past once again. Thus, with 15 tracks of saturated IDM delicacy, Skysleep Interference Works‘ sonic journey perpetually bursts with melodic synth layers and soundtrack motifs (see, for example, “Bring Snow to the Interpretation Center,” “Depth of the Abstractors,” and “Wind will follow the head of the Loch”).

Tracks like “Behind Time, Behind Glass” and “Diminishing Words” stand out as benchmarks, demonstrating Daniels’ amazing (and not surprising) ability to shuffle a plethora of roughened rhythms and glitchy beatwork. Even the more somber tracks, such as “Cascade Dusk” and “Rust Capture,” have a smooth tone that makes the album a harmonious collection of sound-escapes.

Skysleep Interference Works is available on Bandcamp.
