V/A :: World Electronix 3 (Cultivated Electronics)

The World Electronix series has revived the original Cultivated Electronics EPs. The Electro sounds pioneered on those early outings are alive and well, muted notes combined with warming analogue moods, and are now being taken on by new hands and further moulded by veterans. Melting mechanics shift amidst melodic movements.

I’m getting old. It seems like only yesterday that I was at this laptop tapping out a review to World Electronic 1. That was late August 2012. Now, almost a year on, Cultivated Electronics are onto their third installment of this various artists series with some new names to add to the roster.

James T Cotton’s style has been changing of late. His offering for World Electronix 3 exemplifies this continued break from House and Jak. Electro is the product. Beats are stark and to the point with colder coils of sound being employed. Cotton constructs using complex layers to produce a work of stratified computer music. One of the Godfathers of the sound, Gosub, is up next. Space abstraction sees “The Blue in Blackness” send hollowed oscillations into the emptiness. Gentle cascades sit atop bass for a peeled and stripped piece. Label boss Sync24 hooks up with Dublin’s DeFekt. Digital ghosts haunt a wasteland of harsh winds and debris. Wraith-like echoes roll across a vista of barren bleeps and drill-bit beats. Versalife (aka Conforce, Boris Bunnik) arrives for the curtain fall. The Dutch man has been gaining some deserved attention with some superb sounds for labels like Clone and Frustrated Funk. “Ionization” softens the edges of the 12”—from rich rhythmic patterns hang warm twirls of dubbed down 303. Textured tones are brushed with cleansing rinses for a track that harks back to some of the early brilliance of the UK Techno scene.
