V/VM :: HelpAphexTwin/1.0 & 2.0 (V/VM Test Records)

These two 3″ CDs are as close to a black grail of blasphemy as the world of IDM can come to – at least until the butchers from “Northern England” get around to yanking apart some Autechre. If you’ve heard any of the Christmas or Thanksgiving albums from V/VM – or last year’s fantastic “Sick Love” – then you know what’s going to happen to everyone’s favorite Aphex Twin tracks. Complete with lovely song retitlings to go along with the destroyed, distorted and thoroughly raped source material, all your favorites have been (un) covered in one form or another.

Disc one rips into Windowlicker (“WINDuckyQuaCKer”), Ventolin (“henTOLyn goose-fat/rub^scratch/”) and Bacephalus Bouncing Ball (the incomprehensible “bouncing brinnington meat+hagballs”) as well as what sounds like a Come To Daddy collage called “laughing all the way to his tank.” The results are typical V/VM – insane, painful and occassionaly brilliant. Log N Rock Witch (“Hoegaarden slop itch”) is one of the brilliant remixes. The disc ends with a jab – “If I Were A Rich Man,” V/VM style.

Disc two offers more of the same, though it gets a bit rougher. A destroyed version of “Come To Daddy” gets violated, and a few favorites from I Care Because You Do get taken for a ride. Ending with what may have been a Caustic Window track, but fuzzed to death, disc two isn’t nearly as satisfying as the first but overall, this is a definite party gift for all your favorite AFX fans (assuming they have a sense of humor).
