VILLan X / dcantu :: Disparate Implementations (Sequencias)

V/A ‘Disparate Implementations’

The House train rolls on. Studded lines bisect the US, dissect the UK and intersect the states of Europe. But it is from its homeland of America that the mechanical beats of 707, 808 and 909 stream strongest. From the East Coast hails Sequencias, NY in fact. The label has served up two top records to date, from the home soil and across the pond. For the latest 12” Mr. JM De Frias’ label has been met by the grimacing visages of two Jakbeaters, Traxx and D’Marc Cantu, for Disparate Implementations.

The demented Traxx arrives on the scene first, face shrouded under his VILLan X alias—kold features for the lyrical angst. The dish presented is a toxic compression of computer acid served on a brutalised bed of shredded hi-hats—vocals echo whilst Kraftwerkian bleeps bend and stretch. A sordid and mutated affair. Cantu has been getting some well deserved attention of late. His début LP on Crème, Fallen, was well received by all considered (that is anyone I’ve talked to has loved it, including myself.) Fallen sees Cantu chart the symptoms of Jak across two records, drifting into distortion and beyond into arpegiatted rhythms. It is this latter side that Cantu offers here. “The Key” courses with an analogue rumbling akin to Legowelt, whilst beats pour forth in a frenzied pile. A super powerful piece of modern House and another example of this artist’s ability and dexterity.

The immediate comparison for this 12” would be Lux’s Definition of Jak. The same artists are present, and some of the same ideas explored. But the two EP’s are more accompaniments than competitors. VILLan X are the reptilian representatives on the EP. “FK 3DpO” is the horror, the blasphemy and the misanthropic of Jak. “The Key” is the shinier side, the more digestible, but with a decent wallop. More toughness from the men forging a new form of House in the furnaces of the past. Be careful of the fumes.

Disparate Implementations is available on Sequencias.
