The Exaltics / Morphology :: The Exaltics Meets… (Solar One Music)

Witschakowski has consistently tested the definitions of Electro, ranging from soulful mechanics to red-blooded machinery. On this EP he does so again. Likewise, Morphology play with the parameters. The Finns, across their catalogue, have experimented within the limits of the sound; here injecting darkening moods to counteract the more laconic pulses. A thought-provoking and expertly executed EP with some of the best sounds the genre has to offer.

The Exaltics / Morphology ‘The Exaltics Meets…’

[Release page] Two of the main names orbiting the Electro genre are Robert Witschakowski aka The Exaltics and Morphology. So what could be better than these two heavy hitters on one EP? Welcome to the latest in Solar One Music’s The Exaltics Meets… series.

The Exaltics occupy the A-Side and gets things underway with “Changing Things.” This is Electro at its finest. The beats are solid, but reduced. It is the billowing melody that grips. Arpeggiated chords ripple with an almost Techno touch as Witschakowski creates a warm and vivid aspect—a superb piece. The winds from the North arrive with “Quiet Earth.” But Witschakowski doesn’t deliver a cold or raw sound, once again there is a complexity attached to his meanderings. Deep and soulful machine music.

Morphology have been extremely productive of late, or at least are releasing a lot more. The Finns start out this split release with the sterilised sounds of “Neural Network.” But the coldness is countered with deep atmospherics. The closer, “Stochastic Resonance”, echoes its predecessor. The more cleaved edge of Electro is present but sheathed as Morphology layer dense chords across there sharper elements.

Electro can sometimes suffer from a somewhat disinfected disposition, like each sound needs to be boiled and decontaminated before being displayed in a jar of alcohol. This EP does not adhere to this formula. Yes, some of the starker aspects of Electro are present but the central sound is rich and textured.
