Star Pitsa Acid Kru :: Bacardi (ProForm Series)

A vast amount of house being released is emulation, replication of concepts and sounds explored by US and European artists. Star Pitsa are not reinventing the wheel, nor House for that matter. But they are pinning their colours to a sound within the genre’s resuscitation that has gotten less attention.

Star Pitsa Acid Kru ‘Bacardi’

Nowadays, if you’re willing to lend an ear it’s likely to be filled with some house music. Club, blog, record shop guy: House. Some artists and labels blow their trumpets louder than others, or clap their claps if you will. One label quietly, but nonetheless ardently, crafting Chicago inspired quality is Proform Series. As a sublabel of X0X Recordings, the imprint is the acid tweaked darling of PerttuLindroos (Virtu) and MattiTurunen (Näköradiomies/Morphology). With the Summer sun setting its time for something new from Proform, Star Pitsa Acid Kru debut with Bacardi.

Star Pitsa sees Lindross and Turunen come together for some colder climate Chicago collaboration. Two lengthy pieces occupy the twelve inches. First up is “Horns of Hell.” The title belies the subtlety of the track. This is not a bludgeoning piece of 808 fractured Acid but a warm piece of Chitown inspired music. The track comes from the Larry Heard tradition. Lilting melodies are stretched with bass and beat working together. This is not bare knuckle acid, as the appellation might suggest, but moody and complex house. This understated aspect runs through the record and into the B-Side piece, “Star Special.” 303 tones are again employed, but the chords are stretched with padded bass and a deeper melody lying beneath. Gentle but also full figured.

A vast amount of house being released is emulation, replication of concepts and sounds explored by US and European artists. Star Pitsa are not reinventing the wheel, nor house for that matter. But they are pinning their colours to a sound within the genre’s resuscitation that has gotten less attention. This isn’t blank-eyed and ferocious, this is measured and melodic. The more cerebral side of Chicago on display.
