NQ :: Our Own Distance (Neo Ouija)

Concealed in miniature rhythms that pulsate in layers, each of these insulated nuggets of sound reveal themselves pleasantly upon the ears.

NQ

[Purchase] Crumpled sheets of ice, similar in texture to the sounds emanating from a few of the Clicks & Cuts compilations on Mille Plateaux, NQ‘s Our Own Distance is a surplus of surrealism, serenity and splendor. Concealed in miniature rhythms that pulsate in layers, each of these insulated nuggets of sound reveal themselves pleasantly upon the ears. Torn at the edges, it’s no surprise that by the artists own admission, “a lot of the tracks were produced on long train rides between different cities to shut out the noises on the outside and inside, watching things pass and resonate.” Such a contemplative approach is ever present on this non-intrusive and exploratory rhythm factory. “Burq” elevates its digital tentacles and meandering melody as “Cyan Sept IV” hints at Richard Devine’s electroid-architecture. “Grey Windows” introduces chilled beat-scrapes while “No” flexes Telefon Tel Aviv inspired pathways. Treading subtle ground, NQ reveals that nuanced manipulations of digital-to-analog tones can breath new life into an otherwise dwindling world of IDM waveforms.
