Matmos :: The Marriage Of True Minds (Thrill Jockey)

It’s all here, intended for some sort of psychological poke at electronica. John Cage would have loved this.

Quite literally, experiment and study is at the heart of The Marriage of True Minds. Here, Matmos have had individual subjects listen to their music and instantly describe, visually, what it is that they’re hearing. “Large… triangles… green triangles” says one as a sound is heard.

It’s all very oddball and intense, and suitably it’s reflected in the album’s sound. The tracks themselves are largely based around a subjects interview. Sometimes the track will progress and slow down after an interview—sometimes before an interview. Making sense of it all will make hard work for some. The repetition of speech and interview creates a very unpredictable air outside of the music—one that you’ll likely feel uncomfortable in, even if you pause to catch your breath. Yet, the progressions are magnificent in their maniacal glory, and they sound massive too.

Padded synths are often creating the melody with wave after wave of glitch, natural timbre and manipulated vocal sequences to follow, creating the merry-go-round. It’s all here, intended for some sort of psychological
poke at electronica. John Cage would have loved this.

The Marriage Of True Minds is available on Thrill Jockey.
