Marsman :: New Kind of Purple (Lowriders)

The sounds of alien and terrestrial life are revealed on New Kind of Purple, Netherlands-based Marsman’s debut for Lowriders. Elements of discovery, curiosity and a penchant for colorful waveforms are ever present and also happen to be the artists intent: to communicate the meditative powers of frequencies and to consciously deliver this message. Spreading wide-ranging exp-electronic reflections, brightly lit blips and bleeps frolic in the foreground much in the same vein as Plaid and early-era Mouse On Mars—coincidence perhaps? It’s the albums sporadic melodic notes, crisp percussion and drenched jazz-infused bass that stand out on this 10-track manifest. Marsman simply rides the lines of an audio-abstract allowing for tangible tones to expand. It’s uplifting and downtrodden all in the same breath, carving a winding and detailed path along the way. Without focusing on any specific musical entity for this synopsis, New Kind of Purple smears the IDM cross-hairs and accurately communicates the artists self-described mind-states by way of exuberant sound sculpting.
