A return to form, MacroNoise (aka Tomas Sebesta) exhibits continual growth and sound maturation with Various Species, five pieces crossing a wide-angle foray into organic (live) bass wobbling and ethereal electronics. Favorite of the pack is “Still Alive” where an onslaught of rhythm sandblasting eclipses itself with low-end glitch and slight vocal treatments. The title track is a behemoth in and of itself—brittle bells collide with crunchy beats as a few tranquilized strings evolve and eventually decompose into tethered mechanical crumbs. “Brutalism” is a fast-paced workout of more aggressive industrial patches with all the grit and grind to back it up. An extended player of this caliber doesn’t come around that often—take the rumbling flow of “Present Has Gone,” as an example. The slice and dice of each beat is seamlessly fused to an atmospheric drone that is pure sci-fi bliss. “Grey,” perhaps the calmest sibling, expands and contracts with its early Depeche Mode-styled synthesis and string cohesion—this track stands firm on its own. Various Species is an utterly enjoyable listen start to end.

Various Species is available on The Crime League.
