Kylian :: Lappi Inzoo (Toytronic, CD/12")

716 image 1Toytronic continue to intrigue with their adventurous and unpredictable output, this time in the unexpected form of a dual CD/12″ single release entitled Lappi Inzoo from new Finnish talent, Kylian. The CD single is a rarely seen format as far as small independent IDM labels are concerned and it’s extremely welcome to see this one. Hopefully this is a forerunner to a full-length offering as there is an eclectic range of moods and styles incorporated on this release.

“Lappi Inzoo” itself kicks off with a 2 minute intro of brash drum programming that cuts to a jumbled mess of two telephone conversations (one per stereo channel) before finally fading into the main body of the track. It’s a confluence of airy, 90’s strings and cutesy, Gameboy-esque and murderously infectious melodies with choppy, cereal-crunching percussion balanced perfectly in the mix. “Tak-Ap” begins in a similar way, with sparse, time-stretched and twitchy bleeps along with clonking drum programming that are subsequently layered with moody, rather mournful string melodies. There follows a manic version of “Lappi Inzoo” by Roger That Jr, a super-exaggerated remix that’s almost a pastiche of Toytronic’s former flagship releases with their ultra-complex, cut-up structures. The remix nicely throws in some new melodic sequences, providing a substantially different take on the original and works well to break its 8’16” duration into discrete sections. “Eerikson” closes the single and it’s just plaid weird. Combining rhodes-ish keys with weird, squirting synth stabs, this eventually dissolves into almost drum & bass styled mayhem.

Very odd and, in places, very nice indeed.
