Hensen :: Boss Mei (Templar Sound)

For the title track alone, this release is a stone cold classic. Straight into the record bag and quite tasty!

Hensen ‘Boss Mei’

This release on Australia’s Templar Sound label features the production skills of Hensen with a track entitled “Boss Mei.” It’s a pulsing, fizzing beast with interesting percussive elements and a really great grooving bass line. There is something quite captivating about it, and I can’t put my finger on what exactly. It might be the unusual undercurrent of percussion which is certainly full of quirky interest. The bass line is deceptively simple, but it really works with its loping forward momentum coupled with the shuffling hats and straight bass and snare rhythm. The break down and build to the drop in the middle section is really great. Completely understated, yet still huge; wobbly synths and tripped out pads build with great waves of swirling white noise hiding nuggets of sub bass within their protective folds to finally break into the drop with confident driving authority. Alarm like high synth sounds go off in the background while vocal cuts roll in and out of the audio tide line like bits of flotsam bashed about by the sea. Marvelous.

The remix by Thigpen is a complete contrast. Almost beatless, waves of plunging synth stabs crash rhythmically and continuously throughout the track. Not much development is present, and it’s a bit difficult to see where this track would find a home. It is a bit lacking in interest to hold your attention for very long, and is actually a little bit distracting, unfortunately.
