(ghost) :: Departure (n5MD)

(ghost) channels early-era intelligent exp-electronic systems and transforms them into evocative snapshots of rhythmic simplicity suspended just above planet Earth.

It has more than likely been described in other scenarios, but the airport can be quite an emotional place where hello’s and goodbye’s are often exchanged with the departure and arrival of friends and family. The entire process, from check-in, transit through customs, terminals, delays, boarding and up to finding your window seat has (ghost)—aka Connecticut based Brian Froh—creating a stunning slice of melodic electronics that reveals itself gradually with each listen.

“Arrival.Departure.” elicits a tranquil retreat as you await your flight—a blur of faceless people going places we’ll never quite know. The “Plans to Escape” from current coordinates allows each audio scribble to meander into delicate rhythmic patterns. Destinations vary, but if they were to “Soft Sands” or perhaps to a far away “Abyss” somewhere in the middle of the Pacific, the travel time is always of the essence—and in this case, brisk rhythmic beats pepper the landscape just after a “Vertical” assent into the sky. Fluttering bleeps and textures streams of isolated loops all tend to converge on “Distance”—a flowing sheet of light clicks and instrumental soft tones scattered about. The album goes “Full Cycle”—trickling back and forth through gentle Proem-esque spheres as we “Leave it all Behind.” Flying through the sky above this circular cosmic spot, “Endless Roads” can be seen from the “Window Seat” of our flight as clouds break apart in the distance. While Departure may gravitate within surreal electrical manipulation, it is grounded with its emotional swell of actual instruments reminiscing in the background.
