Dream Scoring :: Images of a Myth (Naissance Musik)

Images of a Myth may be a modern record, but its roots are firmly planted in the traditions of 90s electronics. Sounds are deep and warm, analogue and organic.

Hakim Murphy is a prolific producer. Under his own name the Machine Dreams boss has sculpted soulful soundscapes in tones of ambient, house and techno. Over his career the Chicago artist has also partnered up with a number of like minded musicians to explore other avenues, the latest being Montreal’s HEAR to form Dream Scoring.

The latter part of this new pair is lesser known. The Berlin based Sary Senhaoui has been active for a handful of years, his collaboration with Move D on Archipel being a high point for the up and coming artist. With the renowned German musician, the Canadian delivered Distant Voices, a three tracker of experimental and immersive electronics. Senhaoui’s work with Murphy, a project born after a meeting with Murphy at the welsh festival Freerotation, is less experimental but no less absorbing.

Images of a Myth may be a modern record, but its roots are firmly planted in the traditions of 90s electronics. Sounds are deep and warm, analogue and organic. “Silhouette” is shrouded in smoke. Blips and bleeps battle through a haze of meandering notes and rasping rhythms. “Blowed Out” comes from a more exotic place. The fog and fuzz become denser, static veiling bars that cascade against columns of bass. The blurred, dreamlike quality lifts for the sweetened strings of the blissful “Story Catcher.” A steady 4/4 beat tethers the track to the floor, an anchor which “Motion Currents” secures itself to. The track is both out of focus, yet vivid. Keys wash over basslines with just enough muscle to give some extra ballast.

Dream Scoring’s eponymous style melts music and the sleeping mind. Their sound is not one of deep slumbers, nor is it addled and restless. Instead this new group seek the twilight, a time of changing shades and elongating forms. Naissance Musik have achieved a wonderful balance, unhurried compositions that gently swim through cerebral currents of complexity.
