Datacrashrobot :: PHI X 174 EP (Pripyat)

Transmuted electro that buries itself in a mad scientists’ laboratory.

Romania-based Sorin Paun has taken on a few alias’ over the years, venturing into tepid waters filled with broken electronics and mangled rhythms—Randomform and Wirewound and the more mechanical electro outfit Datacrashrobot. As the moniker suggests, data is deconstructed via robotic manipulations, however, electro sheets always pierce through the edges.

On the futuristic void of PHI X 174, the title track, which initially rolls out its bass-clad crunch in slow motion, eventually oscillates with high viscosity near its closure in a brisk two minutes. The three remaining sonic tentacles are chock full of clipped bass, erratic electro and machine noise that would scorch any wooden dance floor. As Datacrashrobot details these disjointed sci-fi structures, even creating a storyline for the entire EP depicted in the PDF liner notes, what’s in store here is a tangled electron web that sputters around in a somewhat cohesive pattern. Transmuted electro that buries itself in a mad scientists’ laboratory.

PHI X 174 is available on Pripyat. [Release page]
