Daif :: 2017 (Crystal Magic)

A brand-new name in my ear, Daif (surname King) is heralded by Crystal Magic as “New Zealand’s most-beloved visual artist/synth-wizard,” which only goes to show how long news from the Antipodes takes to reach me.

2017 is sumptuous, high-def, bubbly electronica from the very near, frictionless future. Songs as slick, shiny and buoyant as a Mylar balloon. Titles that all suggest relaxation, the luxury of mañana, or, considering their unabashed optimism, of mañana ever after—in 2017, everything is already taken care of and all is well, all is well. “Long Peace” is certainly the soundtrack to one’s own personal sea of tranquility, surrounded by a civilization of utter calm and harmony. And of course we love the fact that ”Prologue” is located mid-record, and even more so that it is exactly that—a never-ending (alright, fourteen minutes) beginning.

2017 begins here, and it’s cordless and pretty and gentle and cloudless.

2017 is available on Crystal Magic.
