Cyuild Apo :: Audio Portrait (Detroit Underground)

As Detroit Underground continue to expand their roster, there has always been a key focus on intelligent dance music, all of its subtle mutations, ricocheting melodies, disjointed lyrical blurbs and an improvisational signature. The same holds true for this newly formed outfit known as Cyuild Apo.

Cyuild Apo ‘Audio Portrait’

[Release page] Enabl.ed and Valence Drakes teamed up late 2011 to collaborate on a few tracks—most of which would appear on the recently released Audio Portrait seven-track EP. The duo create and migrate their individual visions of sound in this collation of brief Aphex-Twin’esque bleeps’n tweaks—often landing on glitched-out, headphone approved formations. As if to just tease the ears, the introductory pieces bend and contort gracefully, shifting moods and alternating 8-bit rhythms. Audio Portrait is a growing maze of data processing and digitized crumbs. It isn’t until “Blix3” that everything really takes shape. The gorgeous clicks and electronified hip-hop flows like lava down a steep mountain face, scraping the landscape along the way. Colliding with mechanical bass and beat, the subtle melodies of Audio Portrait invade audio-space and Cyuild Apo’s style shines bright. While IDM flourished in the late 90’s / early 00’s, imprints like DetUnd continue to embrace the (so-called) genre and highlight the skills and frills each musician has to offer. A new generation of electronic sculptors find solace in perpetuating these experimental aspects of music and when it gels, a true audio portrait is unearthed. Thanks to labels like DetUnd—as well as Crazy Language, Lovethechaos, Acre and their close cousins—IDM continues to evolve and exponentially deliver the goods.

Audio Portrait is available on Detroit Underground. [Release page]
