Cygnus ‘Newmark Phase’

[Release page] Sheffield was a strange base for electronic music to spring from. Most famously Warp Records grew from the post-industrial town, broadcasting new and exciting sounds from forgotten factories and ailing mines. But all that has changed. Warp’s focus has changed and the label migrated to London long ago. Nevertheless, Sheffield does have DJ’s and artists testing the electronic waters. One DJ is so proud of the Northern town he adopted it into his name, Sheffield Bleep. With a host of cracking mixes laid down, Mr. Bleep has hung up his headphones to start his own label, Central Processing Unit, with its first transmission coming from debut artist Cygnus.

The title track is a tempered piece of electro. The track is pared back. Warm bars lock with colder undercurrents for a piece edging the lines of space. “Icasean Mutant Police” comes from a similar location. Raw electrical pulses are countered by softened back sounds. Cygnus keeps the most clinical for last. “Red District Girls” sharpens bars and bleeps for a darkened work of underworld electro.

Cygnus comes from the modern aspect of the genre. The sounds are reduced with a strong sense of the machine, and its workings, present. Immediate comparisons come from labels like Cultivated Electronics, Last known Trajectory and Solar One come to mind. Newmark Phase has electro at its core whilst weaving in elements of electronics to deepen the sound. An interesting and well executed debut from both artist and label.
