CVbox :: What You Hear Is What You Get

For their latest, Leipzig based Lunatic are returning to where it all began. Uncanny Valley man CVBox inaugurated the label in 2013 with Le Box DD, now he’s back with four tracks in the shape of What You Hear Is What You Get.

Out of analogue gurgle a beat strikes. This spartan, crisp snare becomes the bedrock for “Hitchhike The Plain,” a work that dances across genre divides. 303 coils spiral skyward, vocals and lush chords follow that upward trajectory before…a break. The track seems to ingest itself as bass lines are sent receding into crevices before re-emerging. What immediately hits the ear is the stark contrast, beginning and end banking away from one another and only re-aligning late in the track’s running. The squirming shortness of “Apolda13” follows, a brief interlude before “TP One.” Styles refuse to be adhered to, the flip side opener adopting elements of IDM and Dub Techno to create a weird and warming hybrid. The finale takes the Berlin mood of its older brother and processes it that bit more. Clicks and pings give way to currents of bleep and mid-console static.

What You Hear Is What You Get is a very hard EP to categorize, then again Lunatic is a difficult imprint to define. Across the year long existence of this fledgling label there has been an outright refusal from the bosses, and musicians, to be pigeonholed. This offering from CVBox picks and chooses from a synthesizer smorgasbord, music being dipped in House, Techno, Electro and more to produce a different and diverse aural entre.
