Closer :: In Search of Life (Self-Released)

A beautifully sonic, softly shifting and emotional instrumental pop ambient album that will ravish fans of the genre.

Closer is a young multifaceted ambient / noise drone / dream pop atmospheric project by a musician from Melbourne. Very promising, the musical identity reveals an incredibly evocative collection of cinematic soundscapes, miniature picturesque scenes with some seriously dense and eloquent moments. In Search of Life is the first full length release by this musical entity, one year after the release of the fuzzed-out droning noise EP White Heat. Subtly moving and immersive, it can be considered as a loyal and honest effort in a musical range ever approached by now famous semi-classical pop ambient artists such as Marsen Jules, Deaf Center, Jasper TX, Klimek and many others.

Dreamy, sad and introspective this album is melodically orientated with sinuous textured droney timbres. The opening track provides a detached and sweetly faded guitar drone mixed with intuitive piano touches sustained by echoing sound treatments to add some resolutely dreamlike effects. “We are silently Roaring through space without meaning” is a more sinister-melancholic absorbing piece with a kind of Basinski-esque flavor. “Someone’s Soul is Drifting” is a luminously and sensitive micro-tonal orchestrated piece with almost glitch sounding effects. “Return Signal” closes the album with an enigmatic-reversed buzzing dronescape dominated by pretty dark, fragile and spiritual minimalist guitar tones. Not a revolutionary album but the artist demonstrates here very convincing abilities and enjoyable compositional skills. A beautifully sonic, softly shifting and emotional instrumental pop ambient album that will ravish fans of the genre.
