Casi Cada Minuto :: In White Rooms (Exitab)

Casi Cada Minuto is a collection of ambient miniatures not unlike the instrumental tracks on Brian Eno’s Another Green World, evocative of pacific dreams on the faraway beaches of distant planets.

[Release page] The buzzing hub of new electronic music in Slovakia, Exitab now releases In White Rooms, the debut recording by Casi Cada Minuto (real name Slavo Herman). After sputtering to a start, the second track, “Milk” attests to a nuanced and ambitious ear, erecting a towering carillon underscored by a warm, melodic bass line. Casi Cada Minuto is a collection of ambient miniatures not unlike the instrumental tracks on Brian Eno’s Another Green World, evocative of pacific dreams on the faraway beaches of distant planets.

However, Slavo undermines the beauty of each track with the strange juxtaposition of non-contextual noise on most every track—a gaggle of geese whirl round the bell tower of “Milk.” “Daysaver” could be his instrumental version of Eno’s “Julie with…,” were it not for all the gadgets and widgets being screwed and bolted into place in the background; it sounds like he is putting the boat together. His calm, lapping “Waves” are troubled by radio chatter and static, “Chievo” by a yammering loop, while the heartrending violin and electronics of “Lies and Goodbyes” happily succeed in shaking off the distortion to sail to a graceful conclusion.

It is a perplexing approach. I almost wish the album came in two versions, one without the extra layer of white noise.
