Automatic Tasty :: The Joys of Departure EP (Photic Fields)

The Joys of Departure delves into the past and re-emerges with late 90s and early 2000s sounds. Rich and complex pieces of analogue music that toe the lines between armchair and dancefloor.

automatic-tasty_the-joys-of-departureI’ve referenced Jonny Dillon aka Automatic Tasty a number of times in articles, but only reviewed his work on one occasion. I had the pleasure of writing up his excellent Speech and Silence. The Irish man is no synth slacker, being quite prolific in his productivity. For his latest effort the Wicklow producer travels to The Netherlands for Photic Fields second release: The Joys of Departure.

“Winetavern Romance” sees analogue waves mixed with gentle Acid stirrings for a deep and stratified piece of Electronica. “The Long Road Home” is reminiscent of Bochum Welt. Broad warming chords are blended with understated snares to create an autumnal analogue work. “Thinking Out Loud” continues down the same path, whimsical keys padded out. There is a C64 aspect to the track, and to the record in general, without ever breaking into the realm of kitsch of cliché. The finale, the Beckettian titled, “Living Vicariously Through My Own Body” is a lush close to a record of retrospective yet unique sounds.

It’s harder to pin down Automatic Tasty’s sound than it first appears. Of course Braindance and Rephlex are major influences, but some of the subtler moments of IDM are present. The Joys of Departure delves into the past and re-emerges with late 90s and early 2000s sounds. Rich and complex pieces of analogue music that toe the lines between armchair and dancefloor.
