(02.24.07) A quick look at the name of this artist and EP and a look at the artwork
will probably allow most of you to make an educated guess of how this 4
track 3″ CD sounds. But that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, this may be
mostly a no-surprises melodic IDM EP but in all honesty it’s quite a good
one.

After all you don’t have to bring something new to the table to be good, and
this EP shows that 8yone has quite a bit of promise. While this EP, in its
own right, may not excite everyones tastes, it does give you the feeling that
8yone is only near the start of his game and he’s only going to get better.
The musicianship is already shining through and I’m expecting great things
in the future.

There are some really nice melodies (especially the pads on “Glück”) and use
of effects and noise as well as, surprisingly, some unexpected use of 909
sounds. (909 sounds, I hear you say? Yes, but they’re used well enough for
you to only notice they’re those sounds if you really listen). There is also
a generous amount of lo-fi in there to keep the feel in and help carve a
little of his own personality in there in an almost saturated genre.

If there was one primary complaint I’d say this EP really suffers from a
lack of mastering. Secondarily some of the production could do with a little
bit of a clean up, the last track in particular. The drums on “My Cold
Sucks!” are dryer than a Nutri-Grain after 4 hours under a heat lamp.

8yone might not be perfect yet but his grasp of melody and construction is
really good and this EP gives you the feel that in the future Mr. Gorf could
make it up there with the big hitters if he improves his production and
creates his own aural visage rather than borrowing heavily from others such
as Arovane or Bola.

If you’re wanting some melodic IDM with a tiny bit of grit, you could do a
lot worse than Keymotion. In all honesty it’s probably worth getting just
for “Glück” on its own.

Keymotion is out now on Boltfish.
