Colo :: “Aubade” (Ki)

A really beautiful piece of music using minimalist ideas of repetition and simplicity.

“Aubade,” taken from London duo Colo’s debut album UR is a stripped back plaintive offering that is really quite poignant. It is also available to stream from Soundcloud, and I recommend you take advantage. The song has a cathedral’s worth of space, and the fragile vocal refrain has a touch of a paean about it to continue the analogy. It’s a really beautiful piece of music using minimalist ideas of repetition and simplicity. Sometimes music can inexplicably grab your attention and have a consuming affect on you. In these situations it’s best not to analyze the whys and wherefores too much, but to just enjoy the warm melancholy embrace of a sadness that resonates and somehow makes one feel less sad. Why does sad music have this affect? It’s something I’ve thought about a fair bit, given that sometimes the thing that helps me feel the best is often the most heartbreaking music. I have some theories, maybe I’ll share them someday, but for now let’s just take a few minutes to enjoy this particular slice of elevating dolefulness.

“Aubade” is taken from last years album release UR.
