Materia :: Razorball/Underfall (Drawn)

Bass, dubstep, techno and downbeat all rolled into one, Razorball/Underfall detonates after-parties with its balance of underground versus club culture appeal.

Materia 'Razorball'

[Release page] September 2011 see’s the release of this double A-side of Materia‘s Razorball/Underfall. A bolt of lightening for the dance floors, but not entirely passing through commercialized clutter or dispensable dubstep, Materia is ready for worldwide notice.

Broad strokes of genius are exhibited on the darker “Underfall,” a mixture of bass-heavy acrobatics, subtle vocal sampling and layers of moving electrical parts. Its counterpart (“Razorball”) carefully sheds on cliched keyboard notes featured prominently in mid-90’s techno. But even with its melodic push, broken breaks and the “Are you ready?” lyrical loop, Materia maintains composure and reveals high production values in this brisk 12-minute teaser for Drawn Recordings.

Bass, dubstep, techno and downbeat all rolled into one, Razorball/Underfall detonates after-parties with its balance of underground versus club culture appeal. But is this any surprise? Materia (aka Jan Warnstam) has been producing and releasing music for almost a decade; Carl Cox even picked-up one of his tracks for his forthcoming Revolutions at Space (Ibiza) mix. It’s pretty clear, at least to these ears, that Materia has strolled around the block a few times and is quite comfortable with his gear.

Razorball/Underfall will be released out now on Drawn. [Release page]
